Why Inflammation Matters
In order to understand how this Anti-Inflammatory Diet-based Challenge works, it is important to understand inflammation, which is a cornerstone of the body's defenses against infection and a crucial part of the healing system.
Normal inflammation. The inflammatory process is a central aspect of healing, absolutely necessary and desirable in the defense, maintenance, and repair of the body, both inside and outside, throughout life. Normal inflammation is the healing system's response to localized injury and attack. It is confined to that location, serves a purpose, and ends when the problem resolves. Any discomfort or limitation of function it causes is the price to be paid for healing. Think of a wound that becomes red, itchy and swollen as it heals - that is a positive, normal inflammation response.
Abnormal inflammation. This occurs when inflammation extends beyond its appointed limits and spreads to areas of the body that have not experienced injury or attack, or when it does not end when the problem that elicited it resolves. The inflammatory process unleashes some of the immune system's most sophisticated weaponry, including enzymes that can rupture cell walls, digesting vital components of cells and tissues. The destructive potential of inflammation is so great that the body must control the process tightly, regulating its focus and turning it off when it has achieved its purpose. When inflammation escapes this control, when it targets normal tissues, when it just won't quit, it promotes disease rather than healing.
Abnormal inflammation has been linked to a variety of health concerns, including:
Autoimmune disorders (such as type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus)
Asthma
Coronary Heart Disease
Alzheimer's Disease
ALS and Parkinson's Disease
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other gut-health related issues
Cancer
Because inflammation can turn against the body, it must stay where it is supposed to stay and end when it is supposed to end. A healthy lifestyle - including a healthy diet - can help to harness inflammation to stay where it is needed.
